Justice took many forms during the Revolution—some hard-won, some unfinished. In East Greenwich, the fight for independence intersected with the fight for freedom itself.

Through the life and legacy of Major General James Mitchell Varnum, the Varnum Continentals, and the First Rhode Island Regiment, this Quest explores how Black men earned their freedom by enlisting to serve for the duration of the war. Visit the Varnum House Museum and Varnum Armory to uncover stories of courage, contradiction, and a revolutionary step toward justice.
