Newport’s deep-water harbor made it one of colonial America’s most valuable—and vulnerable—ports. During the Revolution, occupation by both British and French forces transformed the city into a hotbed of spies, soldiers, rebels, and civilians struggling to survive amid chaos.

The RI250 Newport Quest is part of the RI250 Quest series of scavenger hunts designed to help RI residents and visitors explore the fascinating stories of Rhode Island's role in the American Revolution! Providence is one of eight Rhode Island towns and cities where explorers step into the lives, conflicts, and choices that shaped a colony on the brink of independence.
